The Great Parasitologist
This great woman from Bayambang, Pangasinan studied parasites.
Her name is Carmen C. Velasquez made substanstial contributions to the study
of parasitology. She discovered several species of fish parasites and focused her studies on fish, so she observed how the problem of fish parasites affected the quantity of fish that people could consume.
She also studied how a lot of human diseases and parasites could come from the diseases of the diseases and parasites of animals.
Among Dr. Velasquez's discoveries are 32 species and 1 genus of parasites and 13 families of Philippine food fishes, 2 of birds and 3 of mammals.
Dr.Velasquez got several awards for her accomplishments.
Some of them are the Distinguished Service Medal and Diploma of Honor from the Republic of the Philippines in 1965, The Outstanding Women in Science in the Philippines at the 9th UNESCO Biennial Conference in 1975, and the National Scientist Award in 1983.
Dr. Carmen Velasquez helped a lot of Filipinos with her studies and discoveries.
After living a life full of accomplishments, Dr. Velasquez passed away on October 16, 1994.
